Universal Studios Orlando
Universal Studios is more than just a theme park. It is a real, working studio producing movies, commercials,
television shows, as well as providing pre- and post-production work for other shows.
Universal
Studios isn't a traditional thrill ride theme park like Islands of Adventure would be. The rides and attractions
are a bit more laid back and are a good break from the gut-turning roller coasters. With rides, attractions, and
shows based off popular movies such as Terminator 2, Twister, Jaws, King Kong, and Back to the Future you will
get to experience the movies you have only seen on the big screen until now.
Don't
worry, they didn't forget the kids. At Production Central you and your children can catch a glimpse of a
Nickelodeon
show being filmed. Your kids can also explore Barney and Feivel's playlands, catch a live filming of Animal Planet
Live, and ride Woody Woodpecker's Nuthouse Coaster.
You can also take in different live shows such as the Beetlejuice Rock 'n' Roll Review, the Wild West Stunt Show,
and the Dynamite Nights Stuntacular which features water skis, motor boats and wave runners dashing and crashing
about for your enjoyment, with explosions thrown in for good measure.

Islands of Adventure
If you are looking for pure thrill rides, Islands of Adventure is the place for you. This
theme park, by far, was my favorite in Orlando. From the rides to the layout to the food it seemed to have something
for everyone. Even my mom who hates roller coasters and most rides had a great time there. They also had enough
vomit-inducing rides that I had to go back a second day to get my fill.
Islands of Adventure is basically divided into 5
separate "islands", each with a different unique
theme. The rides are state of the art marvels of engineering. Even the lines that take you to the rides are interesting
from the castle and dungeon at the Dueling Dragons to the newspaper office for Spider Man. Many of the rides are
one of a kind and actually had new technology developed just to pull them off. They even had to develop new construction
techniques to build some of the buildings. Here is a quick overview of the different islands:
Marvel Super Hero Island: This was my favorite part of the park mainly because of the rides but
also because I spent years collecting comic books. There are three main rides located on this island:
- The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman: This is an innovative 3-D ride that transports you to a battle
between Spider Man and most of his main adversaries such as Dr. Octopus, Electro, and Calypso. The 3-D effects
are amazing and no matter where you are sitting it looks like everything is jumping off the screen at you. This
ride is hard to explain and you will have to ride it to believe it.
- The Incredible Hulk Coaster: As you accelerate from 0-40 MPH in two seconds and
immediately enter a zero
gravity turn you will realize that this coaster is unlike any you have ever ridden. The acceleration is close to
what fighter pilots experience when taking off of an aircraft carrier. There is at least 7 inversions on this coaster
as well.
- Dr. Doom's Fear Fall: This devious device from the mind of Dr. Doom rockets you 150 feet straight up
and then pushes you back down faster than gravity. The sheer speed of this ride makes it different from most other
free fall rides.
Jurassic Park: Enter the world of the dinosaurs as you pass through the gates of this island.
The jungle setting, rustling bushes, and distant calls of the dinosaurs will have you looking all around to see
where the dinosaurs are at. The centerpiece of this island is the Jurassic Park River Adventure. This rides starts
off as a gentle river tour through the world of the dinosaurs until a malfunction sends the boat off course. As
you dodge raptors you suddenly come upon the king of the dinosaurs: T-Rex. The only way out is an 85 foot plunge
into total darkness. Add in the Discovery Center, Camp Jurassic, and the Triceratops Encounter and you will think
you are on Isle Nublar.
Toon Lagoon: Toon Lagoon is like walking
through the Sunday morning funny papers. From Dagwood to Heathcliff to Popeye all your favorite cartoon characters
are here. Toon Lagoon features two water rides, Dudley Do-Right's Ripsaw Falls and Popeye and Bluto's Bilge rat
barges. Be prepared to get wet on these rides. They are a great way to cool off on a hot day.
The Lost Continent: Explore a land of myths and legends on the Lost Continent. Here is where you will find
the Dueling Dragons roller coasters. They are the worlds first inverted near miss dueling roller coasters. What does this
mean? This means there are not one but two coasters, you are hanging underneath the roller coaster track as opposed
to sitting on top of it, and you come within inches of the other coaster numerous times throughout the ride. Be
sure to ride in the very front of the Ice Dragon if you can and watch out for the wall (you will see what I mean).
Be sure not to miss the Eighth Voyage of Sinbad live action stunt show. This show has everything from fire to
water to sword fights to high falls. Also be sure to visit
Poseidon's Fury. The water tunnel is one of the coolest
effects I have seen.
Seuss
Landing: Stroll through the pages of Dr. Seuss’s brilliant creations as all the delightful stories you grew
up with come to life at the whimsical, wonderful Seuss Landing. The Caro-Seuss-el contains creatures straight from
the pages of your favorite Dr. Seuss stories. You can also eat a Green Eggs and Ham sandwich. One
interesting fact
about Seuss Landing is none of the buildings have any straight edges or corners. They even imported trees and bushes
that had been bent by hurricanes.
What tickets will I need?
Your best bet for Universal Studios tickets will be the two or three day Universal Escape ticket which will
get you unlimited admission to Universal Studios, Islands
of Adventure, as well as Universal City Walk which is a collection of clubs, restaurants, and shops. This allows
you to spend the morning riding the roller coasters and then relax in the afternoon and explore the movies. By
far the best value would be the 3 day Universal Escape ticket.
Another (and maybe better) option is the Orlando
Flex ticket which gives you more theme park options and is the best value you will find for the Orlando theme
parks.
